Was Japan's Events Linked to Super Moon?

Tonight, March 19th, 2011, there will be what is called a Super Moon. Some even will say that we haven't had one for 18 to 19 years ago. Some fret that this Super Moon will bring even more earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other disasters to follow. People everywhere will keep their eyes open the rest of this week, looking to see if any more catastrophic happenings are to follow this astronomical event.

The term "Super Moon" refers to the unusually large new (or full) moon that us earthlings see when the moon travels almost as close as it can to Earth. An "extreme Super Moon" occurs when the moon reaches its absolute closest point. On March 19, the moon will be only 221,556 miles away — the first extreme Super Moon in nearly 20 years. So is this something we really should be worried about?

The super charged question is: Should we be concerned?

Some astrologers (not astronomers) believe that this "moonageddon" has already started. Already, folks are linking Japan's disaster with it. Astrologists point to history to validate their predictions. Both the New England hurricane of 1938 and the Australian Hunter Valley floods of 1955 happened during Super Moons, they say. The last Super Moon came in 2005, at around the same time as Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian tsunami.

Is there anything backing up these theories?

Absolutely none, says Pete Wheeler of the International Center for Radio Astronomy. All that will happen next week is that the Earth will experience a "lower than usual low tide and a higher than usual high tide." A Super Moon, he concludes, is "nothing to get excited about."

Many scientist feel, including astronomer David Reneke, that you can link any almost any natural disaster or event to anything in the night sky." In the past, he adds, people thought the sun would be pulled apart when the planets aligned. "It didn't happen." And the catastrophic events cited by excitable astrologers didn't even happen that close to Super Moons, points out John Metcalfe at TBD. The Hunter river flooded in February 1955, "two whole months before and after bookending Super Moons."

The full moon always has a certain alure to it that mankind has been drawn to over the ages. I suppose that is why we have so many poems, songs, and even religons that surround the moon and its phases.

Here's what the photographer commentd on her photo,

"I was so inspired by the abundance of moon shots over the past couple of days. Last night was the first night I was actually able to see the moon due to late nights at work. On my way home the moon looked incredible! It was so brightly lit and the clouds were lit up like fire. Unfortunately by the time I got home (I only had my 50mm with me) it had passed, but I'm still satisfied with the result that I did get. I really didn't do too many adjustments to the photo because it kept looking a bit funky."

"Full Wolf Moon - January 22, 2008 Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January's full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Farming By The Moon

In the early days of farming, it was also during the era of Moon Worshiping. Most likely due to observing the relationship between the moon and tides that made early man believe it was the source of all moisture. Everything from sap of plants, blood of all living creatures, to everything liquid all seemed to be controlled by the moon.

Also, Man's first calendar was as periods of time reckoned by the moon. So it was a natural thing to use the changes or phases of the moon to do certain things. Many farmers today still follow those early superstitions.

Planting in "the light of the moon" means in the time between new and the full moon. Planting in the "dark of the moon" refers to the period between full and new moon. However, scientist have a different meaning for these terms. They think that light phase of the moon as the time when the moon is above the horizon from dusk to midnight; and the dark phase is from midnight to dawn. The full moons of September and October are known as "The Harvest Moons". Because of their brilliance, early societies looked to it as a special gift from good spirits. The truth is that the moon is at a smaller angle with the horizon, and so it is more radiant. In the Southern Hemisphere, this bright moon takes place during March and April.

Why is the harvest moon called the Harvest Moon?

The Harvest Moon is a full moon that graces our skies each autumn. It’s the name for the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox. In the northern hemisphere, look for the Harvest Moon to appear in September or October.

Why the name Harvest Moon? It’s more than just a connection to the season of harvest. In fact, nature is particularly cooperative during the months of autumn to make the Harvest Moon useful to farmers.

Here’s what happens. The moon generally rises about 50 minutes later each day. But near the time of the autumnal equinox, the moon rises only about 30 minutes later each day. Why? The reason is that, in autumn, the ecliptic – or path of the sun, moon and planets – makes a narrow angle with the evening horizon. The moon’s path in autumn creates a shorter-than-usual rising time between successive moonrises.

The shorter-than-usual time between moonrises means there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise . . .

So, in the days before tractor lights, the autumn full moon helped farmers bringing in their crops.

As the sun’s light faded in the west, the full moon would rise in the east to illuminate the fields for several more hours of work. Who named the Harvest Moon? That name probably sprang to the lips of farmers throughout the northern hemisphere, on autumn evenings, as the autumn full moon aided in bringing in the crops.

Once In a Blue Moon

Although the full moon that occurred Tuesday, May 20, 2008, looked like an ordinary full moon, it was actually a bit extraordinary—a blue moon.

What is a Blue Moon?
There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days).

The Other Kind of Blue Moon
May 2008's blue moon qualified as such under an older definition, which is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac. According to this definition, the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Why would one want to identify the third full moon in a season of four full moons? The answer is complex, and has to do with the Christian ecclesiastical calendar.
Some years have an extra full moon—13 instead of 12. Since the identity of the moons was important in the ecclesiastical calendar (the Paschal Moon, for example, used to be crucial for determining the date of Easter), a year with a thirteenth moon skewed the calendar, since there were names for only 12 moons. By identifying the extra, thirteenth moon as a blue moon, the ecclesiastical calendar was able to stay on track.

A Star Rating for the Modern Blue Moon
Although Sky & Telescope calls the modern blue moon definition "trendy" and a "mistake," the fact that there is an older, preexisting (and more complicated) definition does not necessarily make it the more interesting or meaningful definition. Charting the "third full moon in four full moons" in a season isn't everyone's idea of an fascinating enterprise. The modern, "trendy" definition, however, points to an intriguing astronomical phenomenon—every so often two moons can manage to position themselves in the same month. Given that full moons occur once every 29.5 days, this is quite an accomplishment!

How Often Does a Blue Moon Occur?
Over the next 20 years there will be about 15 blue moons, with an almost equal number of both types of blue moons occurring. No blue moon of any kind will occur in the years 2011, 2014, and 2017.
The more recent phenomenon, where the blue moon is considered to be the second full moon in a calendar month, last occurred on May 31, 2007. Two full moons in one month may occur in any month out of the year except for February, which is shorter than the lunar cycle.
The other, older blue moon event, which happens when there are four full moons in a season, last occured in August 2005. Since this type of blue moon is reckoned according to the seasons, it can only occur in February, May, August, or November, about a month before the equinox or the solstice.
